43. Az-Zukhruf

فَإِمَّاAnd whetherنَذْهَبَنَّWe take you awayبِكَWe take you awayفَإِنَّاthen indeed, Weمِنْهُمfrom themمُّنتَقِمُونَ(will) take retribution﴿٤١﴾

And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them

أَوْOrنُرِيَنَّكَWe show youٱلَّذِىthat whichوَعَدْنَٰهُمْWe have promised themفَإِنَّاthen indeed, Weعَلَيْهِمover themمُّقْتَدِرُونَhave full power﴿٤٢﴾

Or whether [or not] We show you that which We have promised them, indeed, We are Perfect in Ability

فَٱسْتَمْسِكْSo hold fastبِٱلَّذِىٓto that whichأُوحِىَis revealedإِلَيْكَto youإِنَّكَIndeed, youعَلَىٰ(are) onصِرَٰطٍa PathمُّسْتَقِيمٍStraight﴿٤٣﴾

So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, itلَذِكْرٌ(is) surely, a Reminderلَّكَfor youوَلِقَوْمِكَand your peopleوَسَوْفَand soonتُسْـَٔلُونَyou will be questioned﴿٤٤﴾

And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people, and you [all] are going to be questioned

وَسْـَٔلْAnd askمَنْ(those) whomأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentمِنbefore youقَبْلِكَbefore youمِنofرُّسُلِنَآOur Messengersأَجَعَلْنَاdid We makeمِنbesidesدُونِbesidesٱلرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousءَالِهَةًgodsيُعْبَدُونَto be worshipped﴿٤٥﴾

And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyأَرْسَلْنَاWe sentمُوسَىٰMusaبِـَٔايَٰتِنَآwith Our SignsإِلَىٰtoفِرْعَوْنَFiraunوَمَلَإِي۟هِۦand his chiefsفَقَالَand he saidإِنِّىIndeed, I amرَسُولُa Messengerرَبِّ(of the) Lordٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worlds﴿٤٦﴾

And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds

فَلَمَّاBut whenجَآءَهُمhe came to themبِـَٔايَٰتِنَآwith Our SignsإِذَاbeholdهُمTheyمِّنْهَاat themيَضْحَكُونَlaughed﴿٤٧﴾

But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them

وَمَاAnd notنُرِيهِمWe showed themمِّنْofءَايَةٍa Signإِلَّاbutهِىَitأَكْبَرُ(was) greaterمِنْthanأُخْتِهَاits sisterوَأَخَذْنَٰهُمand We seized themبِٱلْعَذَابِwith the punishmentلَعَلَّهُمْso that they mayيَرْجِعُونَreturn﴿٤٨﴾

And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith]

وَقَالُوا۟And they saidيَٰٓأَيُّهَOٱلسَّاحِرُ[the] magicianٱدْعُInvokeلَنَاfor usرَبَّكَyour Lordبِمَاby whatعَهِدَHe has made covenantعِندَكَwith youإِنَّنَاIndeed, weلَمُهْتَدُونَ(will) surely be guided﴿٤٩﴾

And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided

فَلَمَّاBut whenكَشَفْنَاWe removedعَنْهُمُfrom themٱلْعَذَابَthe punishmentإِذَاbeholdهُمْTheyيَنكُثُونَbroke (their word)﴿٥٠﴾

But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word

وَنَادَىٰAnd called outفِرْعَوْنُFiraunفِىamongقَوْمِهِۦhis peopleقَالَhe saidيَٰقَوْمِO my peopleأَلَيْسَIs notلِىfor meمُلْكُ(the) kingdomمِصْرَ(of) Egyptوَهَٰذِهِand theseٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ[the] riversتَجْرِىflowingمِنunderneath meتَحْتِىٓunderneath meأَفَلَاThen do notتُبْصِرُونَyou see﴿٥١﴾

And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see

أَمْOrأَنَا۠am Iخَيْرٌbetterمِّنْthanهَٰذَاthisٱلَّذِىone who هُوَheمَهِينٌ(is) insignificantوَلَاand hardlyيَكَادُand hardlyيُبِينُclear﴿٥٢﴾

Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear

فَلَوْلَآThen why notأُلْقِىَare placedعَلَيْهِon himأَسْوِرَةٌbraceletsمِّنofذَهَبٍgoldأَوْorجَآءَcomeمَعَهُwith himٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُthe Angelsمُقْتَرِنِينَaccompanying (him)﴿٥٣﴾

Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction

فَٱسْتَخَفَّSo he bluffedقَوْمَهُۥhis peopleفَأَطَاعُوهُand they obeyed himإِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyكَانُوا۟wereقَوْمًاa peopleفَٰسِقِينَdefiantly disobedient﴿٥٤﴾

So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah]

فَلَمَّآSo whenءَاسَفُونَاthey angered UsٱنتَقَمْنَاWe took retributionمِنْهُمْfrom themفَأَغْرَقْنَٰهُمْand We drowned themأَجْمَعِينَall﴿٥٥﴾

And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all

فَجَعَلْنَٰهُمْAnd We made themسَلَفًاa precedentوَمَثَلًاand an exampleلِّلْءَاخِرِينَfor the later (generations)﴿٥٦﴾

And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples

وَلَمَّاAnd whenضُرِبَis presentedٱبْنُ(the) sonمَرْيَمَ(of) Maryamمَثَلًا(as) an exampleإِذَاbeholdقَوْمُكَYour peopleمِنْهُabout itيَصِدُّونَlaughed aloud﴿٥٧﴾

And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud

وَقَالُوٓا۟And they saidءَأَٰلِهَتُنَاAre our godsخَيْرٌbetterأَمْorهُوَheمَاNotضَرَبُوهُthey present itلَكَto youإِلَّاexceptجَدَلًۢا(for) argumentبَلْNayهُمْtheyقَوْمٌ(are) a peopleخَصِمُونَargumentative﴿٥٨﴾

And they said, "Are your gods better, or is he?" They did not present the comparison except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute

إِنْNotهُوَheإِلَّا(was) exceptعَبْدٌa slaveأَنْعَمْنَاWe bestowed Our favorعَلَيْهِon himوَجَعَلْنَٰهُand We made himمَثَلًاan exampleلِّبَنِىٓfor (the) Children of Israelإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَfor (the) Children of Israel﴿٥٩﴾

Jesus was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel

وَلَوْAnd ifنَشَآءُWe willedلَجَعَلْنَاsurely We (could have) madeمِنكُمamong youمَّلَٰٓئِكَةًAngelsفِىinٱلْأَرْضِthe earthيَخْلُفُونَsucceeding﴿٦٠﴾

And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another] on the earth
