37. As-Saffat

فَسَاهَمَThen he drew lotsفَكَانَand wasمِنَofٱلْمُدْحَضِينَthe losers﴿١٤١﴾

And he drew lots and was among the losers

فَٱلْتَقَمَهُThen swallowed himٱلْحُوتُthe fishوَهُوَwhile heمُلِيمٌ(was) blameworthy﴿١٤٢﴾

Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy

فَلَوْلَآAnd if notأَنَّهُۥthat heكَانَwasمِنَofٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَthose who glorify﴿١٤٣﴾

And had he not been of those who exalt Allah

لَلَبِثَCertainly, he (would have) remainedفِىinبَطْنِهِۦٓits bellyإِلَىٰuntilيَوْمِthe Dayيُبْعَثُونَthey are resurrected﴿١٤٤﴾

He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected

فَنَبَذْنَٰهُBut We cast himبِٱلْعَرَآءِonto the open shoreوَهُوَwhile heسَقِيمٌ(was) ill﴿١٤٥﴾

But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill

وَأَنۢبَتْنَاAnd We caused to growعَلَيْهِover himشَجَرَةًa plantمِّنofيَقْطِينٍgourd﴿١٤٦﴾

And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine

وَأَرْسَلْنَٰهُAnd We sent himإِلَىٰtoمِا۟ئَةِa hundredأَلْفٍthousandأَوْorيَزِيدُونَmore﴿١٤٧﴾

And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more

فَـَٔامَنُوا۟And they believedفَمَتَّعْنَٰهُمْso We gave them enjoymentإِلَىٰforحِينٍa while﴿١٤٨﴾

And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time

فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْThen ask themأَلِرَبِّكَDoes your Lordٱلْبَنَاتُ(have) daughtersوَلَهُمُwhile for themٱلْبَنُونَ(are) sons﴿١٤٩﴾

So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons

أَمْOrخَلَقْنَاdid We createٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَthe Angelsإِنَٰثًاfemalesوَهُمْwhile theyشَٰهِدُونَ(were) witnesses﴿١٥٠﴾

Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses

أَلَآNo doubtإِنَّهُمindeed, theyمِّنْofإِفْكِهِمْtheir falsehoodلَيَقُولُونَ[they] say﴿١٥١﴾

Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say

وَلَدَAllah has begottenٱللَّهُAllah has begottenوَإِنَّهُمْand indeed, theyلَكَٰذِبُونَsurely (are) liars﴿١٥٢﴾

Allah has begotten," and indeed, they are liars

أَصْطَفَىHas He chosenٱلْبَنَاتِ[the] daughtersعَلَىoverٱلْبَنِينَsons﴿١٥٣﴾

Has He chosen daughters over sons

مَاWhat is with youلَكُمْWhat is with youكَيْفَHowتَحْكُمُونَyou judge﴿١٥٤﴾

What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement

أَفَلَاThen will notتَذَكَّرُونَyou pay heed﴿١٥٥﴾

Then will you not be reminded

أَمْOrلَكُمْ(is) for youسُلْطَٰنٌan authorityمُّبِينٌclear﴿١٥٦﴾

Or do you have a clear authority

فَأْتُوا۟Then bringبِكِتَٰبِكُمْyour bookإِنifكُنتُمْyou areصَٰدِقِينَtruthful﴿١٥٧﴾

Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful

وَجَعَلُوا۟And they have madeبَيْنَهُۥbetween Himوَبَيْنَand betweenٱلْجِنَّةِthe jinnنَسَبًاa relationshipوَلَقَدْbut certainlyعَلِمَتِknowٱلْجِنَّةُthe jinnإِنَّهُمْthat theyلَمُحْضَرُونَ(will) surely be brought﴿١٥٨﴾

And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment]

سُبْحَٰنَGlory beٱللَّهِ(to) Allahعَمَّاabove whatيَصِفُونَthey attribute﴿١٥٩﴾

Exalted is Allah above what they describe

إِلَّاExceptعِبَادَ(the) slavesٱللَّهِ(of) Allahٱلْمُخْلَصِينَthe chosen﴿١٦٠﴾

Except the chosen servants of Allah [who do not share in that sin]
