15. Al-Hijr

فَلَمَّاAnd whenجَآءَcameءَالَ(to the) familyلُوطٍ(of) Lutٱلْمُرْسَلُونَthe messengers﴿٦١﴾

And when the messengers came to the family of Lot

قَالَHe saidإِنَّكُمْIndeed, youقَوْمٌ(are) a peopleمُّنكَرُونَunknown﴿٦٢﴾

He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown

قَالُوا۟They saidبَلْNayجِئْنَٰكَwe have come to youبِمَاwith whatكَانُوا۟they wereفِيهِin itيَمْتَرُونَdisputing﴿٦٣﴾

They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing

وَأَتَيْنَٰكَAnd we have come to youبِٱلْحَقِّwith the truthوَإِنَّاand indeed, weلَصَٰدِقُونَsurely (are) truthful﴿٦٤﴾

And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful

فَأَسْرِSo travelبِأَهْلِكَwith your familyبِقِطْعٍin a portionمِّنَofٱلَّيْلِthe nightوَٱتَّبِعْand followأَدْبَٰرَهُمْtheir backsوَلَاand notيَلْتَفِتْlet look backمِنكُمْamong youأَحَدٌanyoneوَٱمْضُوا۟and go onحَيْثُwhereتُؤْمَرُونَyou are ordered﴿٦٥﴾

So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded

وَقَضَيْنَآAnd We conveyedإِلَيْهِto himذَٰلِكَ[that]ٱلْأَمْرَthe matterأَنَّthatدَابِرَ(the) rootهَٰٓؤُلَآءِ(of) theseمَقْطُوعٌwould be cut offمُّصْبِحِينَ(by) early morning﴿٦٦﴾

And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning

وَجَآءَAnd cameأَهْلُ(the) peopleٱلْمَدِينَةِ(of) the cityيَسْتَبْشِرُونَrejoicing﴿٦٧﴾

And the people of the city came rejoicing

قَالَHe saidإِنَّIndeedهَٰٓؤُلَآءِtheseضَيْفِى(are) my guestsفَلَاso (do) notتَفْضَحُونِshame me﴿٦٨﴾

[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me

وَٱتَّقُوا۟And fearٱللَّهَAllahوَلَاand (do) notتُخْزُونِdisgrace me﴿٦٩﴾

And fear Allah and do not disgrace me

قَالُوٓا۟They saidأَوَلَمْDid notنَنْهَكَwe forbid youعَنِfromٱلْعَٰلَمِينَthe world﴿٧٠﴾

They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people

قَالَHe saidهَٰٓؤُلَآءِTheseبَنَاتِىٓ(are) my daughtersإِنifكُنتُمْyou would beفَٰعِلِينَdoers﴿٧١﴾

[Lot] said, "These are my daughters - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]

لَعَمْرُكَBy your lifeإِنَّهُمْindeed, theyلَفِىwere inسَكْرَتِهِمْtheir intoxicationيَعْمَهُونَwandering blindly﴿٧٢﴾

By your life, [O Muhammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُSo, seized themٱلصَّيْحَةُthe awful cryمُشْرِقِينَat sunrise﴿٧٣﴾

So the shriek seized them at sunrise

فَجَعَلْنَاAnd We madeعَٰلِيَهَاits highest (part)سَافِلَهَاits lowestوَأَمْطَرْنَاand We rainedعَلَيْهِمْupon themحِجَارَةًstonesمِّنofسِجِّيلٍbaked clay﴿٧٤﴾

And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay

إِنَّIndeedفِىinذَٰلِكَthatلَءَايَٰتٍ(are) the Signsلِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَfor those who discern﴿٧٥﴾

Indeed in that are signs for those who discern

وَإِنَّهَاAnd indeed, itلَبِسَبِيلٍ(is) on a roadمُّقِيمٍestablished﴿٧٦﴾

And indeed, those cities are [situated] on an established road

إِنَّIndeedفِىinذَٰلِكَthatلَءَايَةًsurely (is) a Signلِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَfor the believers﴿٧٧﴾

Indeed in that is a sign for the believers

وَإِنAnd wereكَانَAnd wereأَصْحَٰبُ(the) companionsٱلْأَيْكَةِ(of) the woodلَظَٰلِمِينَsurely wrongdoers﴿٧٨﴾

And the companions of the thicket were [also] wrongdoers

فَٱنتَقَمْنَاSo We took retributionمِنْهُمْfrom themوَإِنَّهُمَاand indeed, they bothلَبِإِمَامٍ(were) on a highwayمُّبِينٍclear﴿٧٩﴾

So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyكَذَّبَdeniedأَصْحَٰبُ(the) companionsٱلْحِجْرِ(of) the Rocky Tractٱلْمُرْسَلِينَthe Messengers﴿٨٠﴾

And certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers
