24. An-Nur

سُورَةٌA Surah أَنزَلْنَٰهَاWe (have) sent it downوَفَرَضْنَٰهَاand We (have) made it obligatoryوَأَنزَلْنَاand We (have) revealedفِيهَآthereinءَايَٰتٍۭVersesبَيِّنَٰتٍclearلَّعَلَّكُمْso that you mayتَذَكَّرُونَtake heed﴿١﴾

[This is] a surah which We have sent down and made [that within it] obligatory and revealed therein verses of clear evidence that you might remember

ٱلزَّانِيَةُThe fornicatressوَٱلزَّانِىand the fornicatorفَٱجْلِدُوا۟[then] flogكُلَّeachوَٰحِدٍoneمِّنْهُمَاof themمِا۟ئَةَ(with) hundredجَلْدَةٍlash(es)وَلَاAnd (let) notتَأْخُذْكُمwithhold youبِهِمَاpity for themرَأْفَةٌpity for themفِىconcerningدِينِ(the) religion of Allahٱللَّهِ(the) religion of Allahإِنifكُنتُمْyouتُؤْمِنُونَbelieveبِٱللَّهِin Allahوَٱلْيَوْمِand the Dayٱلْءَاخِرِthe LastوَلْيَشْهَدْAnd let witnessعَذَابَهُمَاtheir punishmentطَآئِفَةٌa groupمِّنَofٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believers﴿٢﴾

The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse - lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment

ٱلزَّانِىThe fornicatorلَا(will) notيَنكِحُmarryإِلَّاexceptزَانِيَةًa fornicatressأَوْorمُشْرِكَةًa polytheist womanوَٱلزَّانِيَةُand the fornicatress لَا(will) notيَنكِحُهَآmarry herإِلَّاexceptزَانٍa fornicatorأَوْorمُشْرِكٌa polytheist manوَحُرِّمَAnd is forbiddenذَٰلِكَthatعَلَىtoٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believers﴿٣﴾

The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and that has been made unlawful to the believers

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whoيَرْمُونَaccuseٱلْمُحْصَنَٰتِthe chaste womenثُمَّthenلَمْnotيَأْتُوا۟they bringبِأَرْبَعَةِfourشُهَدَآءَwitnessesفَٱجْلِدُوهُمْthen flog themثَمَٰنِينَ(with) eightyجَلْدَةًlashe(s)وَلَاand (do) notتَقْبَلُوا۟acceptلَهُمْtheirشَهَٰدَةًtestimonyأَبَدًاeverوَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَAnd thoseهُمُtheyٱلْفَٰسِقُونَ(are) the defiantly disobedient﴿٤﴾

And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient

إِلَّاExceptٱلَّذِينَthose whoتَابُوا۟repentمِنۢafterبَعْدِafterذَٰلِكَthatوَأَصْلَحُوا۟and reformفَإِنَّThen indeedٱللَّهَAllahغَفُورٌ(is) Oft-ForgivingرَّحِيمٌMost Merciful﴿٥﴾

Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whoيَرْمُونَaccuseأَزْوَٰجَهُمْtheir spousesوَلَمْand notيَكُنhaveلَّهُمْfor themشُهَدَآءُwitnessesإِلَّآexceptأَنفُسُهُمْthemselvesفَشَهَٰدَةُthen (the) testimonyأَحَدِهِمْ(of) one of themأَرْبَعُ(is) fourشَهَٰدَٰتٍۭtestimoniesبِٱللَّهِby Allahإِنَّهُۥthat heلَمِنَ(is) surely ofٱلصَّٰدِقِينَthe truthful﴿٦﴾

And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves - then the witness of one of them [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the truthful

وَٱلْخَٰمِسَةُAnd the fifthأَنَّthatلَعْنَتَ(the) curse of Allahٱللَّهِ(the) curse of Allahعَلَيْهِ(be) upon himإِنifكَانَhe isمِنَofٱلْكَٰذِبِينَthe liars﴿٧﴾

And the fifth [oath will be] that the curse of Allah be upon him if he should be among the liars

وَيَدْرَؤُا۟But it would preventعَنْهَاfrom herٱلْعَذَابَthe punishmentأَنthatتَشْهَدَshe bears witnessأَرْبَعَfourشَهَٰدَٰتٍۭtestimoniesبِٱللَّهِby Allahإِنَّهُۥthat heلَمِنَ(is) surely ofٱلْكَٰذِبِينَthe liars﴿٨﴾

But it will prevent punishment from her if she gives four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the liars

وَٱلْخَٰمِسَةَAnd the fifthأَنَّthatغَضَبَthe wrath of Allahٱللَّهِthe wrath of Allahعَلَيْهَآ(be) upon herإِنifكَانَhe isمِنَofٱلصَّٰدِقِينَthe truthful﴿٩﴾

And the fifth [oath will be] that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was of the truthful

وَلَوْلَاAnd if notفَضْلُ(for) the Grace of Allahٱللَّهِ(for) the Grace of Allahعَلَيْكُمْupon youوَرَحْمَتُهُۥand His Mercy وَأَنَّand thatٱللَّهَAllahتَوَّابٌ(is) Oft-Returning (to Mercy)حَكِيمٌAll-Wise﴿١٠﴾

And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy... and because Allah is Accepting of repentance and Wise

إِنَّIndeedٱلَّذِينَthose whoجَآءُوbroughtبِٱلْإِفْكِthe lieعُصْبَةٌ(are) a groupمِّنكُمْamong youلَا(Do) notتَحْسَبُوهُthink itشَرًّاbadلَّكُمfor youبَلْnayهُوَitخَيْرٌ(is) goodلَّكُمْfor youلِكُلِّFor everyٱمْرِئٍpersonمِّنْهُمamong themمَّا(is) whatٱكْتَسَبَhe earnedمِنَofٱلْإِثْمِthe sinوَٱلَّذِىand the one whoتَوَلَّىٰtook upon himself a greater share of itكِبْرَهُۥtook upon himself a greater share of itمِنْهُمْamong them لَهُۥfor himعَذَابٌ(is) a punishmentعَظِيمٌgreat﴿١١﴾

Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof - for him is a great punishment

لَّوْلَآWhy notإِذْwhenسَمِعْتُمُوهُyou heard itظَنَّthinkٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believing menوَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتُand the believing womenبِأَنفُسِهِمْgood of themselvesخَيْرًاgood of themselvesوَقَالُوا۟and sayهَٰذَآThisإِفْكٌ(is) a lieمُّبِينٌclear﴿١٢﴾

Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of one another and say, "This is an obvious falsehood

لَّوْلَاWhy (did) notجَآءُوthey bringعَلَيْهِfor itبِأَرْبَعَةِfourشُهَدَآءَwitnessesفَإِذْThen whenلَمْnotيَأْتُوا۟they broughtبِٱلشُّهَدَآءِthe witnessesفَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَthen thoseعِندَnear Allahٱللَّهِnear Allahهُمُtheyٱلْكَٰذِبُونَ(are) the liars﴿١٣﴾

Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allah, who are the liars

وَلَوْلَاAnd if notفَضْلُ(for the) Graceٱللَّهِ(of) Allahعَلَيْكُمْupon youوَرَحْمَتُهُۥand His Mercyفِىinٱلدُّنْيَاthe worldوَٱلْءَاخِرَةِand the Hereafterلَمَسَّكُمْsurely would have touched youفِىinمَآwhatأَفَضْتُمْyou had rushed gliblyفِيهِconcerning itعَذَابٌa punishmentعَظِيمٌgreat﴿١٤﴾

And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, you would have been touched for that [lie] in which you were involved by a great punishment

إِذْWhenتَلَقَّوْنَهُۥyou received itبِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْwith your tonguesوَتَقُولُونَand you saidبِأَفْوَاهِكُمwith your mouthsمَّاwhatلَيْسَnotلَكُمfor youبِهِۦof itعِلْمٌany knowledgeوَتَحْسَبُونَهُۥand you thought itهَيِّنًا(was) insignificantوَهُوَwhile itعِندَ(was) near Allahٱللَّهِ(was) near Allahعَظِيمٌgreat﴿١٥﴾

When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allah, tremendous

وَلَوْلَآAnd why notإِذْwhenسَمِعْتُمُوهُyou heard itقُلْتُمyou saidمَّاNotيَكُونُit isلَنَآfor usأَنthatنَّتَكَلَّمَwe speakبِهَٰذَاof thisسُبْحَٰنَكَGlory be to YouهَٰذَاThisبُهْتَٰنٌ(is) a slanderعَظِيمٌgreat﴿١٦﴾

And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, [O Allah]; this is a great slander

يَعِظُكُمُAllah warns youٱللَّهُAllah warns youأَنthatتَعُودُوا۟you returnلِمِثْلِهِۦٓ(to the) like of itأَبَدًاeverإِنifكُنتُمyou areمُّؤْمِنِينَbelievers﴿١٧﴾

Allah warns you against returning to the likes of this [conduct], ever, if you should be believers

وَيُبَيِّنُAnd Allah makes clearٱللَّهُAnd Allah makes clearلَكُمُto youٱلْءَايَٰتِthe VersesوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahعَلِيمٌ(is) All-KnowerحَكِيمٌAll-Wise﴿١٨﴾

And Allah makes clear to you the verses, and Allah is Knowing and Wise

إِنَّIndeedٱلَّذِينَthose whoيُحِبُّونَlikeأَنthatتَشِيعَ(should) spreadٱلْفَٰحِشَةُthe immoralityفِىamongٱلَّذِينَthose whoءَامَنُوا۟believeلَهُمْfor themعَذَابٌ(is) a punishmentأَلِيمٌpainfulفِىinٱلدُّنْيَاthe worldوَٱلْءَاخِرَةِand the HereafterوَٱللَّهُAnd Allahيَعْلَمُknowsوَأَنتُمْwhile youلَا(do) notتَعْلَمُونَknow﴿١٩﴾

Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know

وَلَوْلَاAnd if notفَضْلُ(for the) Grace of Allahٱللَّهِ(for the) Grace of Allahعَلَيْكُمْupon youوَرَحْمَتُهُۥand His MercyوَأَنَّAnd thatٱللَّهَAllahرَءُوفٌ(is) Full of KindnessرَّحِيمٌMost Merciful﴿٢٠﴾

And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy... and because Allah is Kind and Merciful
