96. Al-'Alaq

ٱقْرَأْReadبِٱسْمِin (the) nameرَبِّكَ(of) your Lordٱلَّذِىthe One Whoخَلَقَcreated ﴿١﴾

Recite in the name of your Lord who created

خَلَقَHe createdٱلْإِنسَٰنَmanمِنْfromعَلَقٍa clinging substance﴿٢﴾

Created man from a clinging substance

ٱقْرَأْReadوَرَبُّكَand your Lordٱلْأَكْرَمُ(is) the Most Generous﴿٣﴾

Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous

ٱلَّذِىThe One Whoعَلَّمَtaughtبِٱلْقَلَمِby the pen﴿٤﴾

Who taught by the pen

عَلَّمَTaughtٱلْإِنسَٰنَmanمَاwhatلَمْnotيَعْلَمْhe knew﴿٥﴾

Taught man that which he knew not

كَلَّآNayإِنَّIndeedٱلْإِنسَٰنَmanلَيَطْغَىٰٓsurely transgresses﴿٦﴾

No! [But] indeed, man transgresses

أَنThatرَّءَاهُhe sees himselfٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓself-sufficient﴿٧﴾

Because he sees himself self-sufficient

إِنَّIndeedإِلَىٰtoرَبِّكَyour Lordٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ(is) the return﴿٨﴾

Indeed, to your Lord is the return

أَرَءَيْتَHave you seenٱلَّذِىthe one whoيَنْهَىٰforbids﴿٩﴾

Have you seen the one who forbids

عَبْدًاA slaveإِذَاwhenصَلَّىٰٓhe prays﴿١٠﴾

A servant when he prays

أَرَءَيْتَHave you seenإِنifكَانَhe isعَلَىuponٱلْهُدَىٰٓ[the] guidance﴿١١﴾

Have you seen if he is upon guidance

أَوْOrأَمَرَhe enjoinsبِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ[of the] righteousness﴿١٢﴾

Or enjoins righteousness

أَرَءَيْتَHave you seenإِنifكَذَّبَhe deniesوَتَوَلَّىٰٓand turns away﴿١٣﴾

Have you seen if he denies and turns away

أَلَمْDoes notيَعْلَمhe knowبِأَنَّthatٱللَّهَAllahيَرَىٰsees﴿١٤﴾

Does he not know that Allah sees

كَلَّاNayلَئِنIfلَّمْnotيَنتَهِhe desistsلَنَسْفَعًۢاsurely We will drag himبِٱلنَّاصِيَةِby the forelock﴿١٥﴾

No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock

نَاصِيَةٍA forelockكَٰذِبَةٍlyingخَاطِئَةٍsinful﴿١٦﴾

A lying, sinning forelock

فَلْيَدْعُThen let him callنَادِيَهُۥhis associates﴿١٧﴾

Then let him call his associates

سَنَدْعُWe will callٱلزَّبَانِيَةَthe Angels of Hell﴿١٨﴾

We will call the angels of Hell

كَلَّاNayلَا(Do) notتُطِعْهُobey himوَٱسْجُدْBut prostrateوَٱقْتَرِبand draw near (to Allah)﴿١٩﴾

No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]
