81. At-Takwir

إِذَاWhenٱلشَّمْسُthe sunكُوِّرَتْis wrapped up﴿١﴾

When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلنُّجُومُthe starsٱنكَدَرَتْfall, losing their luster﴿٢﴾

And when the stars fall, dispersing

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلْجِبَالُthe mountainsسُيِّرَتْare moved away﴿٣﴾

And when the mountains are removed

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلْعِشَارُthe full-term she-camelsعُطِّلَتْ(are) left untended﴿٤﴾

And when full-term she-camels are neglected

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلْوُحُوشُthe wild beastsحُشِرَتْare gathered﴿٥﴾

And when the wild beasts are gathered

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلْبِحَارُthe seasسُجِّرَتْare made to overflow﴿٦﴾

And when the seas are filled with flame

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلنُّفُوسُthe soulsزُوِّجَتْare paired﴿٧﴾

And when the souls are paired

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُthe female infant buried aliveسُئِلَتْis asked﴿٨﴾

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

بِأَىِّFor whatذَنۢبٍsinقُتِلَتْshe was killed﴿٩﴾

For what sin she was killed

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلصُّحُفُthe pagesنُشِرَتْare laid open﴿١٠﴾

And when the pages are made public

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلسَّمَآءُthe skyكُشِطَتْis stripped away﴿١١﴾

And when the sky is stripped away

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلْجَحِيمُthe Hellfireسُعِّرَتْis set ablaze﴿١٢﴾

And when Hellfire is set ablaze

وَإِذَاAnd whenٱلْجَنَّةُParadiseأُزْلِفَتْis brought near﴿١٣﴾

And when Paradise is brought near

عَلِمَتْWill knowنَفْسٌa soulمَّآwhatأَحْضَرَتْit has brought﴿١٤﴾

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it]

فَلَآBut nayأُقْسِمُI swearبِٱلْخُنَّسِby the retreating planets﴿١٥﴾

So I swear by the retreating stars

ٱلْجَوَارِThose that runٱلْكُنَّسِ(and) disappear﴿١٦﴾

Those that run [their courses] and disappear

وَٱلَّيْلِAnd the nightإِذَاwhenعَسْعَسَit departs﴿١٧﴾

And by the night as it closes in

وَٱلصُّبْحِAnd the dawnإِذَاwhenتَنَفَّسَit breathes﴿١٨﴾

And by the dawn when it breathes

إِنَّهُۥIndeed, itلَقَوْلُ(is) surely a wordرَسُولٍ(of) a Messengerكَرِيمٍnoble﴿١٩﴾

[That] indeed, the Qur'an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger

ذِىPossessor ofقُوَّةٍpowerعِندَwithذِى(the) Owner ofٱلْعَرْشِthe Throneمَكِينٍsecure﴿٢٠﴾

[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position]
