74. Al-Muddaththir

عَنِAboutٱلْمُجْرِمِينَthe criminals﴿٤١﴾

About the criminals

مَاWhatسَلَكَكُمْled youفِىintoسَقَرَHell﴿٤٢﴾

[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar

قَالُوا۟They will sayلَمْNotنَكُwe wereمِنَofٱلْمُصَلِّينَthose who prayed﴿٤٣﴾

They will say, "We were not of those who prayed

وَلَمْAnd notنَكُwe used toنُطْعِمُfeedٱلْمِسْكِينَthe poor﴿٤٤﴾

Nor did we used to feed the poor

وَكُنَّاAnd we used toنَخُوضُindulge in vain talkمَعَwithٱلْخَآئِضِينَthe vain talkers﴿٤٥﴾

And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it]

وَكُنَّاAnd we used toنُكَذِّبُdenyبِيَوْمِ(the) Dayٱلدِّينِ(of) the Judgment﴿٤٦﴾

And we used to deny the Day of Recompense

حَتَّىٰٓUntilأَتَىٰنَاcame to usٱلْيَقِينُthe certainty﴿٤٧﴾

Until there came to us the certainty

فَمَاThen notتَنفَعُهُمْwill benefit themشَفَٰعَةُintercessionٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ(of) the intercessors﴿٤٨﴾

So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors

فَمَاThen whatلَهُمْ(is) for themعَنِ(that) fromٱلتَّذْكِرَةِthe Reminderمُعْرِضِينَthey (are) turning away﴿٤٩﴾

Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away

كَأَنَّهُمْAs if they (were)حُمُرٌdonkeysمُّسْتَنفِرَةٌfrightened﴿٥٠﴾

As if they were alarmed donkeys

فَرَّتْFleeingمِنfromقَسْوَرَةٍۭa lion﴿٥١﴾

Fleeing from a lion

بَلْNayيُرِيدُDesiresكُلُّeveryٱمْرِئٍpersonمِّنْهُمْof themأَنthatيُؤْتَىٰhe may be givenصُحُفًاpagesمُّنَشَّرَةًspread out﴿٥٢﴾

Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about

كَلَّاNayبَلButلَّاnotيَخَافُونَthey fearٱلْءَاخِرَةَthe Hereafter﴿٥٣﴾

No! But they do not fear the Hereafter

كَلَّآNayإِنَّهُۥIndeed, itتَذْكِرَةٌ(is) a Reminder﴿٥٤﴾

No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder

فَمَنSo whoeverشَآءَwillsذَكَرَهُۥ(may) pay heed to it﴿٥٥﴾

Then whoever wills will remember it

وَمَاAnd notيَذْكُرُونَwill pay heedإِلَّآexceptأَنthatيَشَآءَwillsٱللَّهُAllahهُوَHeأَهْلُ(is) worthyٱلتَّقْوَىٰto be fearedوَأَهْلُand worthyٱلْمَغْفِرَةِto forgive﴿٥٦﴾

And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness
