53. An-Najm

وَٱلنَّجْمِBy the starإِذَاwhenهَوَىٰit goes down﴿١﴾

By the star when it descends

مَاNotضَلَّhas strayedصَاحِبُكُمْyour companionوَمَاand notغَوَىٰhas he erred﴿٢﴾

Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred

وَمَاAnd notيَنطِقُhe speaksعَنِfromٱلْهَوَىٰٓthe desire﴿٣﴾

Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination

إِنْNotهُوَitإِلَّا(is) exceptوَحْىٌa revelationيُوحَىٰrevealed﴿٤﴾

It is not but a revelation revealed

عَلَّمَهُۥHas taught himشَدِيدُthe (one) mightyٱلْقُوَىٰ(in) power﴿٥﴾

Taught to him by one intense in strength

ذُوPossessor of soundnessمِرَّةٍPossessor of soundnessفَٱسْتَوَىٰAnd he rose﴿٦﴾

One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form

وَهُوَWhile heبِٱلْأُفُقِ(was) in the horizon ٱلْأَعْلَىٰthe highest﴿٧﴾

While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon

ثُمَّThenدَنَاhe approachedفَتَدَلَّىٰand came down﴿٨﴾

Then he approached and descended

فَكَانَAnd wasقَابَ(at) a distanceقَوْسَيْنِ(of) two bow-(lengths)أَوْorأَدْنَىٰnearer﴿٩﴾

And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer

فَأَوْحَىٰٓSo he revealedإِلَىٰtoعَبْدِهِۦHis slaveمَآwhatأَوْحَىٰhe revealed﴿١٠﴾

And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed

مَاNotكَذَبَliedٱلْفُؤَادُthe heartمَاwhatرَأَىٰٓit saw﴿١١﴾

The heart did not lie [about] what it saw

أَفَتُمَٰرُونَهُۥThen will you dispute with himعَلَىٰaboutمَاwhatيَرَىٰhe saw﴿١٢﴾

So will you dispute with him over what he saw

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyرَءَاهُhe saw himنَزْلَةً(in) descentأُخْرَىٰanother﴿١٣﴾

And he certainly saw him in another descent

عِندَNearسِدْرَةِ(the) Lote Treeٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ(of) the utmost boundary﴿١٤﴾

At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary

عِندَهَاNear itجَنَّةُ(is the) Gardenٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ(of) Abode﴿١٥﴾

Near it is the Garden of Refuge

إِذْWhenيَغْشَىcoveredٱلسِّدْرَةَthe Lote Treeمَاwhatيَغْشَىٰcovers﴿١٦﴾

When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]

مَاNotزَاغَswervedٱلْبَصَرُthe sightوَمَاand notطَغَىٰit transgressed﴿١٧﴾

The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]

لَقَدْCertainlyرَأَىٰhe sawمِنْofءَايَٰتِ(the) Signsرَبِّهِ(of) his Lordٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓthe Greatest﴿١٨﴾

He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُSo have you seenٱللَّٰتَthe Latوَٱلْعُزَّىٰand the Uzza﴿١٩﴾

So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza

وَمَنَوٰةَAnd Manatٱلثَّالِثَةَthe thirdٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓthe other﴿٢٠﴾

And Manat, the third - the other one
