37. As-Saffat

وَٱلصَّٰٓفَّٰتِBy those linedصَفًّا(in) rows﴿١﴾

By those [angels] lined up in rows

فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِAnd those who driveزَجْرًاstrongly﴿٢﴾

And those who drive [the clouds]

فَٱلتَّٰلِيَٰتِAnd those who reciteذِكْرًا(the) Message﴿٣﴾

And those who recite the message

إِنَّIndeedإِلَٰهَكُمْyour Lordلَوَٰحِدٌ(is) surely One﴿٤﴾

Indeed, your God is One

رَّبُّLordٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthوَمَاand whatبَيْنَهُمَا(is) between both of themوَرَبُّand Lordٱلْمَشَٰرِقِ(of) each point of sunrise﴿٥﴾

Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises

إِنَّاIndeed, Weزَيَّنَّا[We] adornedٱلسَّمَآءَthe skyٱلدُّنْيَا[the world]بِزِينَةٍwith an adornmentٱلْكَوَاكِبِ(of) the stars﴿٦﴾

Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars

وَحِفْظًاAnd (to) guardمِّنagainstكُلِّeveryشَيْطَٰنٍdevilمَّارِدٍrebellious﴿٧﴾

And as protection against every rebellious devil

لَّاNotيَسَّمَّعُونَthey may listenإِلَىtoٱلْمَلَإِthe assemblyٱلْأَعْلَىٰ[the] exaltedوَيُقْذَفُونَare peltedمِنfromكُلِّeveryجَانِبٍside﴿٨﴾

[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side

دُحُورًاRepelledوَلَهُمْand for themعَذَابٌ(is) a punishmentوَاصِبٌperpetual﴿٩﴾

Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment

إِلَّاExceptمَنْ(him) whoخَطِفَsnatchesٱلْخَطْفَةَ(by) theftفَأَتْبَعَهُۥbut follows himشِهَابٌa burning flameثَاقِبٌpiercing﴿١٠﴾

Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness]

فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْThen ask themأَهُمْAre theyأَشَدُّa strongerخَلْقًاcreationأَمorمَّنْ(those) whomخَلَقْنَآWe have createdإِنَّاIndeed, Weخَلَقْنَٰهُمcreated themمِّنfromطِينٍa clayلَّازِبٍۭsticky﴿١١﴾

Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay

بَلْNayعَجِبْتَyou wonderوَيَسْخَرُونَwhile they mock﴿١٢﴾

But you wonder, while they mock

وَإِذَاAnd whenذُكِّرُوا۟they are remindedلَاnotيَذْكُرُونَthey receive admonition﴿١٣﴾

And when they are reminded, they remember not

وَإِذَاAnd whenرَأَوْا۟they seeءَايَةًa Signيَسْتَسْخِرُونَthey mock﴿١٤﴾

And when they see a sign, they ridicule

وَقَالُوٓا۟And they sayإِنْNotهَٰذَآ(is) thisإِلَّاexceptسِحْرٌa magicمُّبِينٌclear﴿١٥﴾

And say, "This is not but obvious magic

أَءِذَاIs it whenمِتْنَاwe are deadوَكُنَّاand have becomeتُرَابًاdustوَعِظَٰمًاand bonesأَءِنَّاshall we thenلَمَبْعُوثُونَbe certainly resurrected﴿١٦﴾

When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَاOr our fathersٱلْأَوَّلُونَformer﴿١٧﴾

And our forefathers [as well]

قُلْSayنَعَمْYesوَأَنتُمْand youدَٰخِرُونَ(will be) humiliated﴿١٨﴾

Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible

فَإِنَّمَاThen onlyهِىَitزَجْرَةٌ(will be) a cryوَٰحِدَةٌsingleفَإِذَاthen, beholdهُمْTheyيَنظُرُونَwill see﴿١٩﴾

It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing

وَقَالُوا۟And they will sayيَٰوَيْلَنَاO woe to usهَٰذَاThisيَوْمُ(is the) Dayٱلدِّينِ(of) the Recompense﴿٢٠﴾

They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense
