19. Maryam

قَالَHe saidكَذَٰلِكِThusقَالَsaidرَبُّكِyour Lordهُوَ'Itعَلَىَّ(is) for Meهَيِّنٌeasyوَلِنَجْعَلَهُۥٓand so that We will make himءَايَةًa signلِّلنَّاسِfor the mankindوَرَحْمَةًand a Mercyمِّنَّاfrom UsوَكَانَAnd (it) isأَمْرًاa matterمَّقْضِيًّاdecreed.'﴿٢١﴾

He said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed

فَحَمَلَتْهُSo she conceived himفَٱنتَبَذَتْand she withdrewبِهِۦwith himمَكَانًا(to) a placeقَصِيًّاremote﴿٢٢﴾

So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place

فَأَجَآءَهَاThen drove herٱلْمَخَاضُthe pains of childbirthإِلَىٰtoجِذْعِ(the) trunkٱلنَّخْلَةِ(of) the date-palmقَالَتْShe saidيَٰلَيْتَنِىO! I wishمِتُّI (had) diedقَبْلَbeforeهَٰذَاthisوَكُنتُand I wasنَسْيًا(in) oblivionمَّنسِيًّاforgotten﴿٢٣﴾

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten

فَنَادَىٰهَاSo cried to herمِنfromتَحْتِهَآbeneath herأَلَّاThat (do) notتَحْزَنِىgrieveقَدْverilyجَعَلَ(has) placedرَبُّكِyour Lordتَحْتَكِbeneath youسَرِيًّاa stream﴿٢٤﴾

But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream

وَهُزِّىٓAnd shakeإِلَيْكِtowards youبِجِذْعِ(the) trunkٱلنَّخْلَةِ(of) the date-palmتُسَٰقِطْit will dropعَلَيْكِupon youرُطَبًاfresh datesجَنِيًّاripe﴿٢٥﴾

And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates

فَكُلِىSo eatوَٱشْرَبِىand drinkوَقَرِّىand coolعَيْنًا(your) eyesفَإِمَّاAnd ifتَرَيِنَّyou seeمِنَfromٱلْبَشَرِhuman beingأَحَدًاanyoneفَقُولِىٓthen sayإِنِّىIndeed, Iنَذَرْتُ[I] have vowedلِلرَّحْمَٰنِto the Most Graciousصَوْمًاa fastفَلَنْso notأُكَلِّمَI will speakٱلْيَوْمَtodayإِنسِيًّا(to any) human being﴿٢٦﴾

So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man

فَأَتَتْThen she cameبِهِۦwith himقَوْمَهَا(to) her peopleتَحْمِلُهُۥcarrying himقَالُوا۟They saidيَٰمَرْيَمُO MaryamلَقَدْCertainlyجِئْتِyou (have) broughtشَيْـًٔاan amazing thingفَرِيًّاan amazing thing﴿٢٧﴾

Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented

يَٰٓأُخْتَO sisterهَٰرُونَ(of) HarunمَاNotكَانَwasأَبُوكِyour fatherٱمْرَأَan evil manسَوْءٍan evil manوَمَاand notكَانَتْwasأُمُّكِyour motherبَغِيًّاunchaste﴿٢٨﴾

O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste

فَأَشَارَتْThen she pointedإِلَيْهِto himقَالُوا۟They saidكَيْفَHowنُكَلِّمُ(can) we speakمَن(to one) whoكَانَisفِىinٱلْمَهْدِthe cradleصَبِيًّاa child﴿٢٩﴾

So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child

قَالَHe saidإِنِّىIndeed, I amعَبْدُa slaveٱللَّهِ(of) AllahءَاتَىٰنِىَHe gave meٱلْكِتَٰبَthe Scriptureوَجَعَلَنِىand made meنَبِيًّاa Prophet﴿٣٠﴾

[Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet

وَجَعَلَنِىAnd He (has) made meمُبَارَكًاblessedأَيْنَwhereverمَاwhereverكُنتُI amوَأَوْصَٰنِىand has enjoined (on) meبِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ[of] the prayerوَٱلزَّكَوٰةِand zakahمَاas long as I amدُمْتُas long as I amحَيًّاalive﴿٣١﴾

And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive

وَبَرًّۢاAnd dutifulبِوَٰلِدَتِىto my motherوَلَمْand notيَجْعَلْنِىHe (has) made meجَبَّارًاinsolentشَقِيًّاunblessed﴿٣٢﴾

And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant

وَٱلسَّلَٰمُAnd peace (be)عَلَىَّon meيَوْمَ(the) dayوُلِدتُّI was bornوَيَوْمَand (the) dayأَمُوتُI will dieوَيَوْمَand (the) DayأُبْعَثُI will be raisedحَيًّاalive﴿٣٣﴾

And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive

ذَٰلِكَThatعِيسَى(was) Isaٱبْنُ(the) sonمَرْيَمَ(of) Maryamقَوْلَa statementٱلْحَقِّ(of) truthٱلَّذِىthat whichفِيهِabout itيَمْتَرُونَthey dispute﴿٣٤﴾

That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth about which they are in dispute

مَاNotكَانَ(it) isلِلَّهِfor AllahأَنthatيَتَّخِذَHe should takeمِنany sonوَلَدٍany sonسُبْحَٰنَهُۥٓGlory be to HimإِذَاWhenقَضَىٰٓHe decreesأَمْرًاa matterفَإِنَّمَاthen onlyيَقُولُHe saysلَهُۥto itكُنBeفَيَكُونُand it is﴿٣٥﴾

It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, "Be," and it is

وَإِنَّAnd indeedٱللَّهَAllahرَبِّى(is) my Lordوَرَبُّكُمْand your Lordفَٱعْبُدُوهُso worship HimهَٰذَاThisصِرَٰطٌ(is) a pathمُّسْتَقِيمٌstraight﴿٣٦﴾

[Jesus said], "And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path

فَٱخْتَلَفَBut differedٱلْأَحْزَابُthe sectsمِنۢfrom among themبَيْنِهِمْfrom among themفَوَيْلٌso woeلِّلَّذِينَto those whoكَفَرُوا۟disbelieveمِنfromمَّشْهَدِ(the) witnessingيَوْمٍ(of) a Dayعَظِيمٍgreat﴿٣٧﴾

Then the factions differed [concerning Jesus] from among them, so woe to those who disbelieved - from the scene of a tremendous Day

أَسْمِعْHow they will hearبِهِمْHow they will hearوَأَبْصِرْand how (they will) seeيَوْمَ(the) Dayيَأْتُونَنَاthey will come to Usلَٰكِنِbutٱلظَّٰلِمُونَthe wrongdoersٱلْيَوْمَtodayفِى(are) inضَلَٰلٍerrorمُّبِينٍclear﴿٣٨﴾

How [clearly] they will hear and see the Day they come to Us, but the wrongdoers today are in clear error

وَأَنذِرْهُمْAnd warn themيَوْمَ(of the) Dayٱلْحَسْرَةِ(of) the Regretإِذْwhenقُضِىَhas been decidedٱلْأَمْرُthe matterوَهُمْAnd theyفِى(are) inغَفْلَةٍheedlessnessوَهُمْand theyلَا(do) notيُؤْمِنُونَbelieve﴿٣٩﴾

And warn them, [O Muhammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded; and [yet], they are in [a state of] heedlessness, and they do not believe

إِنَّاIndeed, Weنَحْنُ[We]نَرِثُ[We] will inheritٱلْأَرْضَthe earthوَمَنْand whoeverعَلَيْهَا(is) on itوَإِلَيْنَاand to Usيُرْجَعُونَthey will be returned﴿٤٠﴾

Indeed, it is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is on it, and to Us they will be returned
