68. Al-Qalam

فَتَنَادَوْا۟And they called one anotherمُصْبِحِينَ(at) morning﴿٢١﴾

And they called one another at morning

أَنِThatٱغْدُوا۟Go earlyعَلَىٰtoحَرْثِكُمْyour cropإِنifكُنتُمْyou wouldصَٰرِمِينَpluck (the) fruit﴿٢٢﴾

[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit

فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟So they wentوَهُمْwhile theyيَتَخَٰفَتُونَlowered (their) voices﴿٢٣﴾

So they set out, while lowering their voices

أَنThatلَّاNotيَدْخُلَنَّهَاwill enter itٱلْيَوْمَtodayعَلَيْكُمupon youمِّسْكِينٌany poor person﴿٢٤﴾

[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person

وَغَدَوْا۟And they went earlyعَلَىٰwithحَرْدٍdeterminationقَٰدِرِينَable﴿٢٥﴾

And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able

فَلَمَّاBut whenرَأَوْهَاthey saw itقَالُوٓا۟they saidإِنَّاIndeed, weلَضَآلُّونَ(are) surely lost﴿٢٦﴾

But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost

بَلْNayنَحْنُWeمَحْرُومُونَ(are) deprived﴿٢٧﴾

Rather, we have been deprived

قَالَSaidأَوْسَطُهُمْ(the) most moderate of themأَلَمْDid notأَقُلI tellلَّكُمْyouلَوْلَا'Why notتُسَبِّحُونَyou glorify (Allah)?'﴿٢٨﴾

The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]

قَالُوا۟They saidسُبْحَٰنَGlory beرَبِّنَآ(to) our LordإِنَّاIndeed, weكُنَّا[we] wereظَٰلِمِينَwrongdoers﴿٢٩﴾

They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers

فَأَقْبَلَThen approachedبَعْضُهُمْsome of themعَلَىٰtoبَعْضٍothersيَتَلَٰوَمُونَblaming each other﴿٣٠﴾

Then they approached one another, blaming each other

قَالُوا۟They saidيَٰوَيْلَنَآO woe to usإِنَّاIndeed, weكُنَّا[we] wereطَٰغِينَtransgressors﴿٣١﴾

They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors

عَسَىٰPerhapsرَبُّنَآour Lordأَن[that]يُبْدِلَنَاwill substitute for usخَيْرًاa betterمِّنْهَآthan itإِنَّآIndeed, weإِلَىٰtoرَبِّنَاour Lordرَٰغِبُونَturn devoutly﴿٣٢﴾

Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous

كَذَٰلِكَSuchٱلْعَذَابُ(is) the punishmentوَلَعَذَابُAnd surely the punishmentٱلْءَاخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterأَكْبَرُ(is) greaterلَوْifكَانُوا۟theyيَعْلَمُونَknow﴿٣٣﴾

Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew

إِنَّIndeedلِلْمُتَّقِينَfor the righteousعِندَwithرَبِّهِمْtheir Lordجَنَّٰتِ(are) Gardensٱلنَّعِيمِ(of) Delight﴿٣٤﴾

Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure

أَفَنَجْعَلُThen will We treatٱلْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsكَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَlike the criminals﴿٣٥﴾

Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals

مَاWhatلَكُمْ(is) for youكَيْفَHowتَحْكُمُونَ(do) you judge﴿٣٦﴾

What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge

أَمْOrلَكُمْ(is) for youكِتَٰبٌa bookفِيهِwhereinتَدْرُسُونَyou learn﴿٣٧﴾

Or do you have a scripture in which you learn

إِنَّIndeedلَكُمْfor youفِيهِin itلَمَاwhatتَخَيَّرُونَyou choose﴿٣٨﴾

That indeed for you is whatever you choose

أَمْOrلَكُمْfor youأَيْمَٰنٌoathsعَلَيْنَاfrom usبَٰلِغَةٌreachingإِلَىٰtoيَوْمِ(the) Dayٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrectionإِنَّindeedلَكُمْfor youلَمَا(is) whatتَحْكُمُونَyou judge﴿٣٩﴾

Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge

سَلْهُمْAsk themأَيُّهُمwhich of themبِذَٰلِكَfor thatزَعِيمٌ(is) responsible﴿٤٠﴾

Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible
