15. Al-Hijr

الٓرAlif Laam RaتِلْكَTheseءَايَٰتُ(are) the Versesٱلْكِتَٰبِ(of) the Bookوَقُرْءَانٍand Quranمُّبِينٍclear﴿١﴾

Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an

رُّبَمَاPerhapsيَوَدُّwill wishٱلَّذِينَthose whoكَفَرُوا۟disbelievedلَوْifكَانُوا۟they had beenمُسْلِمِينَMuslims﴿٢﴾

Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims

ذَرْهُمْLeave themيَأْكُلُوا۟(to) eatوَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟and enjoyوَيُلْهِهِمُand diverted themٱلْأَمَلُthe hopeفَسَوْفَthen soonيَعْلَمُونَthey will come to know﴿٣﴾

Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know

وَمَآAnd notأَهْلَكْنَاWe destroyedمِنanyقَرْيَةٍtownإِلَّاbutوَلَهَا(there was) for itكِتَابٌa decreeمَّعْلُومٌknown﴿٤﴾

And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree

مَّاNotتَسْبِقُ(can) advanceمِنْanyأُمَّةٍnationأَجَلَهَاits termوَمَاand notيَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ(can) delay it﴿٥﴾

No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter

وَقَالُوا۟And they sayيَٰٓأَيُّهَاO youٱلَّذِى(to) whomنُزِّلَhas been sent downعَلَيْهِ[on him]ٱلذِّكْرُthe Reminderإِنَّكَindeed, youلَمَجْنُونٌ(are) surely mad﴿٦﴾

And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad

لَّوْWhyمَاnotتَأْتِينَاyou bring to usبِٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِthe Angelsإِنifكُنتَyou areمِنَofٱلصَّٰدِقِينَthe truthful﴿٧﴾

Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful

مَاNotنُنَزِّلُWe send downٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَthe Angelsإِلَّاexceptبِٱلْحَقِّwith the truthوَمَاand notكَانُوٓا۟they would beإِذًاthenمُّنظَرِينَgiven respite﴿٨﴾

We do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved

إِنَّاIndeed, WeنَحْنُWeنَزَّلْنَاhave sent downٱلذِّكْرَthe Reminderوَإِنَّاand indeed, Weلَهُۥof itلَحَٰفِظُونَ(are) surely Guardians﴿٩﴾

Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlyأَرْسَلْنَاWe (had) sentمِنbefore youقَبْلِكَbefore youفِىinشِيَعِthe sectsٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)﴿١٠﴾

And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples

وَمَاAnd notيَأْتِيهِمcame to themمِّنanyرَّسُولٍMessengerإِلَّاbutكَانُوا۟they didبِهِۦat himيَسْتَهْزِءُونَmock﴿١١﴾

And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him

كَذَٰلِكَThusنَسْلُكُهُۥWe let it enterفِىinقُلُوبِ(the) heartsٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ(of) the criminals﴿١٢﴾

Thus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals

لَاNotيُؤْمِنُونَthey believeبِهِۦin itوَقَدْand verilyخَلَتْhave passedسُنَّةُthe way(s)ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)﴿١٣﴾

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples

وَلَوْAnd (even) ifفَتَحْنَاWe openedعَلَيْهِمto themبَابًاa gateمِّنَfromٱلسَّمَآءِthe heavenفَظَلُّوا۟and they were to continueفِيهِthereinيَعْرُجُونَ(to) ascend﴿١٤﴾

And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend

لَقَالُوٓا۟They would surely sayإِنَّمَاOnlyسُكِّرَتْhave been dazzledأَبْصَٰرُنَاour eyesبَلْNayنَحْنُweقَوْمٌ(are) a peopleمَّسْحُورُونَbewitched﴿١٥﴾

They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic

وَلَقَدْAnd verilyجَعَلْنَاWe have placedفِىinٱلسَّمَآءِthe heavensبُرُوجًاconstellationsوَزَيَّنَّٰهَاand We have beautified itلِلنَّٰظِرِينَfor the observers﴿١٦﴾

And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers

وَحَفِظْنَٰهَاAnd We have protected itمِنfromكُلِّeveryشَيْطَٰنٍdevilرَّجِيمٍaccursed﴿١٧﴾

And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah]

إِلَّاExceptمَنِ(one) whoٱسْتَرَقَstealsٱلسَّمْعَthe hearingفَأَتْبَعَهُۥthen follows himشِهَابٌa burning flameمُّبِينٌclear﴿١٨﴾

Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame

وَٱلْأَرْضَAnd the earthمَدَدْنَٰهَاWe have spread itوَأَلْقَيْنَاand [We] castفِيهَاthereinرَوَٰسِىَfirm mountainsوَأَنۢبَتْنَاand [We] caused to growفِيهَاthereinمِنofكُلِّeveryشَىْءٍthingمَّوْزُونٍwell-balanced﴿١٩﴾

And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing

وَجَعَلْنَاAnd We have madeلَكُمْfor youفِيهَاthereinمَعَٰيِشَmeans of livingوَمَنand whomلَّسْتُمْyou are notلَهُۥfor himبِرَٰزِقِينَproviders﴿٢٠﴾

And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers
